ALEVE DIRECT THERAPY TENS DEVICE FAQ

TENS Technology

    What is TENS?

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a therapy that uses electrical stimulation to relieve pain. There are two clinical theories of how TENS can relieve pain: by blocking the transmission of pain, and by stimulating endorphins, the body’s natural pain-reducing chemicals. Aleve Direct Therapy uses patented 3-stage waveform technology to incorporate both clinical theories of TENS to provide pain relief.

    What are endorphins?

Endorphins are chemicals naturally released in the brain that reduce pain.

TENS device, TENS unit, TENS machine — what's the difference?

It all means the same thing. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) devices, units or machines deliver electrical stimulation directly to the source of pain. The design, quality and waveform patterns of Aleve Direct Therapy differ from other TENS products, but the technology is the same.

    What does "waveform" mean?

The waveform refers to the stimulation pattern provided by the TENS device. The Aleve Direct Therapy patented 3-stage waveform stimulation pattern can help relieve pain by helping block pain signals and may also stimulate the nerves to produce endorphins, which reduces sensitivity to pain. Sometimes people grow accustomed to the selected treatment intensity during treatment, so it feels less intense. The Aleve Direct Therapy waveform stimulation pattern can help minimize this from happening, but it is still possible. You can adjust intensity with the remote control "+" or "-" buttons. If adjustment does not work, you may need to replace the batteries in the device.

How does TENS compare to EMS (electrical muscular stimulation) or NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation)?

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a therapy that uses electrical stimulation for pain relief. EMS is used to prevent or reduce muscle atrophy, the weakening and loss of muscle tone, which can be experienced after surgeries or injuries. NMES is used as physical therapy for muscle strengthening or retraining after prolonged immobilization, surgery or injury.
